This one time in my junior English class, I was trash-talking this girl I didn’t like. I was using words like petty, shallow, and needy. My friends didn’t warn me that the teacher had come up behind me and started listening. When I finished, he demanded to know who I was talking about. So I hastily said, “Jordan Baker.” He was taken off guard by this answer and asked how I came to this conclusion. I gave specific examples from The Great Gatsby and ended up convincing my teacher that I felt so strongly about a fictional character that I was gossiping about her to my classmates.
